Armed To The Teeth

"Armed To The Teeth"

Definition

To be heavily armed.

Believed Origin

Originating from the 17th century, a Pirate would carry many weapons about him to compensate for the limitations of having single-shot weapons. To complete their armoury they would also carry a knife between their teeth, hence the term to be "armed to the teeth".
