Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth

"Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth"

Definition

Don't be critical of a free gift.

Believed Origin

The age and usefulness of a horse can be determined by inspecting its teeth because a horse's gums recede with age. A horse gifted to someone would not need such an inspection because it is free and would therefore be deemed foolish to do anything
other than take the free gift.
