MANILA, Philippines -- The National Democratic Front (NDF) has slammed Manila archbishop, Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, for calling extrajudicial killings under the Arroyo administration a "mere speck" compared to those under the Marcos dictatorship.
Indeed, Rosales should not have made a comment like this. First, there is a separation of the church and the state. You can give your opinion about politics. But don't use the pulpit. He is forgetting that Catholicism is dwindling now, and that his style of leadership may have clicked during the middle ages in Europe, and the 60s and 70s in the Philippines. But that was it.
Secondly, raising up Marcos again is begging the issue. Is he lawyering for the Arroyo government? Then, don't raise the ghost of Marcos, for Chrissake.
Thirdly, is he contradicting the reports of foreign investigators on extrajudicial killings? And by how? By raising something "far worse" as he said. Far worse and still Filipino. "Hey, don't make a big fuss out of the murders you see. That was nothing compared to what happened in the Martial law years. Here." Huh?
