Bono Takes Issue with Vanity Fair

Bono is taking a page from Vanity Fair. Actually, make that several hundred pages.

The U2 frontman and activist has signed on to guest-edit the magazine's Africa-themed July issue, which will hit newsstands in early June.

"As guest editor, I want Africa to appear an adventure, not a burden, and put faces and personalities to the statistics we read elsewhere," the Dublin native said in a statement.

"Five thousand Africans die every day of a preventable, treatable disease [HIV/AIDS]. If [VF editor-in-chief Graydon Carter], his team, and I succeed, the reader will care more about the daily squandering of these noble, entrepreneurial, optimistic lives, people who are familiar to us in every other way than circumstance."

Or, as he told the New York Times earlier this week, "Africa is sexy and people need to know that."

Unreleased Jimmy Page Guitar Riff To Be Retrieved From Secret Vault To Save Rock And Roll

GWYNEDD, WALES—Recent developments in the music world, such as the popularity of the Dixie Chicks and Sufjan Stevens, have created a "perfect storm of lameness."

Jimmy Page.  Led Zep.  I once thought he was a god of guitar.  Then I saw the likes of Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Satriani.  Imagine watching hours of guitar clips from those rock heroes, adding when available, Jimi Hendrix, Clapton and Eddie Van Halen - ok, as the innovator in the early 80s.    Then, after those drugs, watching Jimmy Page play Stairway to heaven live.  I don't see why they like it.  Well, ok.  It was better than all the guitarists now.  But not as good as the best of the best.  Remember he slided down to rhythm when Clapton came.  Not a Jimmy Page fan.  My brother would hate this.

YouTube Revenues: $15 million per year, or per month?

It looks like the “conservative” estimate by John Dvorak late last year that YouTube was generating $15 million or so per month in advertising revenues was off by a factor of about twelve. Bear Stearns analyst Robert Peck reviewed a recent Google SEC filing and says YouTube generated approximately $15 million in revenue for all of 2006.

The markets are still digesting the San Francisco Chronicle “the sky is falling” story and the recent good news/bad news coming out of GooTube. But it’s just too early to tell if Google stole YouTube away from its competitors (as some Yahoo shareholders say), or if they swallowed a poison pill that they’ll soon regret. It’s clear that the big content owners like YouTube, they just don’t like it enough to put it in an iTunes-like monopsony position around television content. They are going to want to back many horses in the race.

Powerful Indonesian earthquake kills 70 (AP)

AP - A powerful earthquake crumpled houses across a large swath of western Indonesia on Tuesday, killing at least 70 people and injuring hundreds, authorities said, predicting that the toll would rise.

This may well be another start of activity in the ring of fire.  Got to be careful.  Well, nothing much will happen even if we are careful.  The world need not care for us too.  The world needs to heal itself.  Whether or not it kills a few thousand or hundred thousand.  The world is not perfect.  It need not be.

Well...Sometimes, pictures are all that's needed to show that life has become meaningful for certain individuals because of you. It is not something that you need to write about, or shout about. It is something that is felt in your heart. Something that no amount of words - flowery or scientific - can fully explain.



For me, when you take away the fear of a child, by removing the man-made barriers between a learner and a teacher, you set the child aware of the all the mighty things s/he can discover. S/he is no longer afraid to ask questions. S/he knows that you may not all the answers, but you will help him/her find the answers. Whether or not you will still be there when s/he finds the answers.




When a child opens up to you, by showing his/her precious and private world to you, then, it's a gift. It's something that will be treasured by him/her forever. S/he may never remember your name, but in her heart, she knows someone existed in a far away time and place, who is a reason for her being successful. And when s/he fails, s/he will never give up. S/he will always rise because s/he knows someone believed in him/her. Someone believed that s/he can make it.
